modern baseball

Posnanski has a post about how he thinks (probably not this great original idea, but it's Posnanski, so it's well written) that baseball is better than ever right now, and that you shouldn't listen to those who are constantly talking about how much better the old days were.

For me, the money paragraph (I was actually thinking about something similar the other day, going through all the young players in the game and how many awesome ones there were):

With Albert Pujols, we are probably seeing the best hitter since Ted Williams. With Tim Lincecum, we are getting our very own Sandy Koufax (plus stocking cap!). There has not been a shortstop like Hanley Ramirez since …. Alex Rodriguez, who is about to hit his 600th home run. Ichiro is one of a kind. We are seeing the twilight of some incredible players — Manny, Thome, Griffey, Vlady, Chipper. We are seeing what looks to be a remarkable new generation — Longoria, Jiminez, Price, Rasmus, Braun.

Joe Mauer, a catcher, has won three batting titles — never happened before. Zack Greinke provides endless entertainment. Chase Utley does everything. Dustin Pedroia gets under your skin. Carl Crawford is just cool. Derek Jeter, in aura, is today’s DiMaggio. Ubaldo Jiminez, Neftali Feliz, Jonathan Broxton, Joel Zumaya, Daniel Bard, Mark Lowe, Matt Lindstrom and many others have thrown a pitch 100 mph this year. Ryan Howard has hit 198 home runs the last four years. And so on and so on and so on.

  1. I really liked the gymnast comparison, and I feel like it's exactly what I think about this game compared to the old game.

  2. One of the comments on the Posnanski blogged linked to this Onion article from 2000, pretty funny.
